Pune: The Velhe Taluka in Pune district has now been officially renamed as ‘Rajgad’. The renaming proposal by the Maharashtra government has received approval from the Central government, and the state gazette notification will be issued soon.

The taluka is home to the historic Rajgad Fort, the first capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Following the suggestion of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the decision was finalized by State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule.

Out of 70 gram panchayats in Velhe, 58 along with the Pune Zilla Parishad had passed resolutions supporting the name change. The Revenue Department later granted its approval, marking this as a historic decision.

Rajgad Fort, from where Shivaji Maharaj administered Swarajya for 27 years, now lends its name to the taluka. This fulfills a long-pending demand of the people of Velhe and Pune district, making it a moment of historic significance.
