Mumbai: Political atmosphere in the State is heating up over crime against women in the backdrop of the sexual abuse of two minor girls at a school in Badlapur in Thane district and other such recent incidents in the State.

People are demanding strict and quick action against culprits in these cases. Opposition parties have alleged that the State Government has failed to maintain law and order while criminals are not afraid of the law.

Reacting to the allegations by the opposition, Shiv Sena (BT) leader Sanjay Gaikwad said, “Such incidents happen. That does not mean the Chief Minister would go around in schools and look after their security.”

Gaikwad’s comment has triggered a row. He was speaking to a Marathi news channel.

Gaikwad’s comment

Sanjay Gaikwad said, “The Badlapur incident is unfortunate. It is a perversion. But the opposition is politicising the issue. They are holding the government responsible for the incident. Will the Chief Minister personally look after the security in all schools in the State? Does a criminal call up the police before committing a crime? Will an SP visit his home so that he does not indulge in crime?”

‘Opposition is politicising the issue’

Gaikwad said, “Such incidents happen. There is a system to tackle crimes. It is the responsibility of the police. If they are unable to deal with it, the CBI steps in. But a culprit is not allowed to go scot free. Instead of politicising the incident, all should work together so that criminals get the harshest punishment.”

The Badlapur incident

A staffer from a school in Badlapur sexually abused two minor girls. This led to an intensified agitation in the town demanding punishment for the culprit. Meanwhile, the accused has been arrested. The trial will be conducted in a fast-track court so that the accused gets the harshest punishment. The State Government has promised this.
