Rohingya Man Builds House in Pune

Pune:

In July this year, Pimpri Chinchwad police took action against four Rohingyas—two Myanmar men and their wives—living in the Dehu Road area for illegally staying in India. However, shocking news has come to light in further investigation in this case. As per the news given by the Indian Express newspaper, one of the accused in this case, Mujammil Mohammad Amin Khan (age 43), has constructed his own house in Pune’s Dehu Road area. Further, he has also procured Indian identity documents, including Aadhar cards and Indian passports, for himself and his wife.

As per the police information, Khan has completed his ‘Maulana Course’ from the Islamic Institute in Myanmar. He had been living with his wife and two daughters in Myanmar. However, in December 2012, Khan shifted to Bangladesh along with his family. In the refugee camp in Bangladesh, Khan tried to get some work but did not get anything. Therefore, he planned to move to India to find some work.

Meanwhile, Khan left his first wife due to constant arguments with her and remarried another Rohingya woman, named Shafiqa, who was already the mother of a child then. After that, he crossed the international border in West Bengal in mid-2013 and entered India with his second wife and child. He then went to Kolkata but could not find work there either.

After that, Khan came to Pune by train and started working in the private company in Talegaon MIDC. Police suspected that one of the employees of that company was involved in bringing people from Bangladesh and Myanmar to Pune, with the help of whom Khan also joined the company. The police are searching for that employee.

As his income was so meagre to manage daily expenditure of the family, Khan started selling kids’ clothes. For that, he would buy clothes from Bhiwandi and sell them in Pune. Shockingly, at that time, Khan made his fake Aadhar Card ID from one of the shops in Bhiwandi in only 500 rupees. As per the police information, one of the agents in Bhiwandi helped him to get a fake Aadhar card through which he got an Indian identity. After that, he also prepared Aadhar cards for his family.

In the meantime, Khan learnt about the betel nut business and started selling it in the local market. During this time, he came into contact with Chandrabhaga Kamble, a resident of Gandhi Nagar, Dehu Road. Kamble had a vacant plot of land adjacent to her house. Police informed that Khan purchased Kamble’s approximately 600 square feet of land for Rs 80,000 in cash. Shockingly, he did not submit any documents at the time of the transaction.

Khan acquired the land and built a house on it. Without letting police know anything about it, Khan lived there with his family for about a decade, pretending to be an Indian citizen. During this, he also gave birth to a daughter and obtained an Indian passport while working as a betel nut seller.

However, in July, police from the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad raided Khan’s house along with another suspect, Shahid alias Sohiddul Sheikh (35). Sheikh was a Rohingya and was arrested by the police from the Dehu Road area. He was alleged to have been living in India illegally with his wife since 2015. During interrogation, Sheikh also told the police about Mujammil Khan and informed them about his original identity. The police then detained Mujammil Khan.

In this regard, a case was registered against Sheikh, Khan, and their wives at the Dehu Road police station on July 27, 2024. The police seized their cell phones, SIM cards, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, Bangladeshi currency, and Indian passports issued to Sheikh, Khan, and Shafiqa. The FIR said that police also seized Khan’s ‘Maulana Course’ certificate and a Myanmar identity card with his name and photograph. The police informed that suspects were later released on bail, and the case is still pending in court.

Meanwhile, police learnt that Chandrabhaga Kamble, who sold land to Khan, died a few years ago and was unaware of his original identity. Currently, the land on which Khan has built his house is in her name in the government record. Meanwhile, the Pimpri Chinchwad Police have written to passport officials to cancel the passports of Mujammil Khan and other suspects.
