Pune:

A massive Jan Aakrosh Andolan (Public Outcry) was held in Baramati city on Tuesday under the leadership of Baramati MP Supriya Sule and NCP (SP) leader Yugendra Pawar, on behalf of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction). The protest focused on the plummeting prices of onions and milk, with demonstrators demanding the implementation of a minimum support price (MSP) to safeguard farmers’ livelihoods.

Taking their demands to the streets, MP Supriya Sule, Yugendra Pawar, and party office-bearers joined hundreds of activists at Tin Hatti Chowk. Sporting black ribbons as a symbol of dissent, activists raised slogans against the central government’s policies.

The protest highlighted the impact of the central government’s decision to impose export duties on onions, which has caused a steady decline in their prices over the past two years. Farmers cultivating onions, especially in horticultural areas, have been hit hard as traders are unable to export their produce.

The agitation also addressed the ongoing crisis in the dairy sector. Sule and other leaders emphasised that milk-producing farmers have been ignored by both the central and state governments. They pointed out that rural youth, heavily dependent on dairy farming, are now grappling with dwindling incomes.

Sule said that the economic slowdown in rural areas stems directly from unfair milk prices. If the government ensures fair pricing, the wheels of rural prosperity will turn once again, adding that this issue is not just about farmers but the entire rural ecosystem.

The protest saw active participation from key NCP leaders and supporters, including Adv. S.N. Jagtap, Adv. Sandeep Gujar, Satyavrat Kale, Vanita Bankar, and Aarti Shendge.
