Tragic Accident in Nanded: Tractor Carrying Women Laborers Falls Into Well in Alegaon, 9 Dead

In a heartbreaking incident, a tractor transporting women laborers plunged into a well in Alegaon, a village in Maharashtra’s Nanded district, on the morning of April 3, 2025, around 9:00 AM. The group was on its way to harvest turmeric in nearby fields when the tractor reportedly lost control due to slippery conditions caused by recent rains.
According to local sources, around 12 women were aboard the tractor at the time. Tragically, nine of them have been confirmed dead, with drowning cited as the cause water had filled their mouths and noses. Two to three women managed to escape and save themselves, but the fate of the remaining passengers remains unknown.
Rescue operations are currently underway but are proving difficult due to the well being full and the tractor yet to be located. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as the search continues.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Alegaon and neighboring communities. The village, located about 21 km from Nanded city and home to around 1,164 people (as per the 2011 Census), is predominantly dependent on agriculture. This tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers faced by rural laborers, particularly during adverse weather, and underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures in agricultural transport.
Further updates are awaited as rescue teams continue their operations.
