Mumbai: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has removed DGP Rashmi Shukla from her post and has directed the State Government to recommend names of the three senior most IPS officers in the State.

The senior most IPS officer is Commissioner of Police Vivek Phansalakar. Sanjay Varma and Ritesh Kumar follow him in that order in terms of seniority.

The State Chief Secretary will send these three names to the ECI, which will confirm a name. It may make an announcement to that effect till Tuesday (October 5) evening. Outgoing DGP Rashmi Shukla’s charge has been immediately handed over to Phansalkar.

The appointment will last till the State elections get over. Later, the new government could decide about the DGP appointment. The Maha Yuti government extended Rashmi Shukla’s service by two years.

If the Maha Yuti assumes power after the elections, she could again be appointed as the DGP. If the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) takes over the reins, they could change the Maha Yuti’s decision and cancel her service extension.
