Pune: Mega projects is the buzzword in astronomical research today. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO-India) is one such project. The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) is playing the role of a catalyst for conceptualising mega projects, conducting technical experiments, building skilled manpower and carrying out scientific research. Pune will be known as the laboratory for mega astronomical projects after the completion of the IUCAA 2.0 premises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The IUCAA, established in 1988 on the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), is now doubling its capacity as the Academic and Research Building \u2013 IUCAA 2 is being completed. The new building will accommodate LIGO, a separate laboratory for Astrosat research, classrooms for PhD students, space for fellows, an auditorium, a conference hall, etc. It is estimated to cost Rs 30 crore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Advanced laboratory<\/p>\n\n\n\n
IUCAA Director Dr R Srianand said, \u201cA separate laboratory is being set up for the underground LIGO. Special arrangements have been made to provide a vibration-free environment for special equipment. Optic lab, clean room, radio astrophysics lab will be provided. Data sent by Astrosat is studied at IUCAA, for which a state-of-the-art laboratory will be built.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Staff strength goes up<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The teaching and non-teaching staff at IUCAA has increased by 40 pc. The number of students has doubled. IUCAA 2.0 will provide research infrastructure for the coming 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Training facilities<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Required skilled manpower and technicians will be provided by IUCAA. MSc students will be able to carry out experiments. A one-year research-training programme will be made available in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
