Pune: The city is not only known as the cultural capital of Maharashtra but also exercises a considerable political clout. Though Mumbai is the capital and Nagpur is the winter capital of the State, most of the political activities take place in Pune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several Pune MPs and MLAs from the city have become ministers in the State and Central cabinets. Many of them have put the city on the national map. Sharad Pawar, Supriya Sule and Murlidhar Mohol are some of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pune district has political, social, cultural and educational importance. Pune has a great political legacy. The State Assembly elections are around the corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Current scenario in the city, district<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Pune Lok Sabha constituency has eight assembly segments: Kasba Peth, Kothrud, Parvati, Shivajinagar, Hadapsar, Cantonment, Khadakwasla and Vadgaon Sheri. The BJP is strong in six of them as they have MLAs from these segments. In Pune district, 10 MLAs belong to the NCP. They have sided with Ajit Pawar after a vertical split in the party. The BJP has eight while the Congress has three MLAs in the district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Pune, the Kothrud and Kasba Peth seats have been BJP strongholds for almost three decades. However, Congressman Ravindra Dhangekar won the bypoll from Kasba Peth after the death of BJP MLA Mukta Tilak. Dhangekar\u2019s personal rapport with voters was a game-changing factor. This segment may prove a game changer again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junnar Assembly segment: There were 11 candidates in the fray in 2019. The two main rivals were Atul Benke and Asha Buchke. Benke won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ambegaon Assembly seat: Though several candidates contested the poll, NCP\u2019s Dilip Walse-Patil won against his nearest rival Shiv Sena\u2019s Rajaram Bankhele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Khed-Alandi Assembly constituency: NCP candidate Dilip Mohite Patil defeated his nearest rival Shiv Sena\u2019s Suresh Gore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shirur Assembly seat: Traditional rivals Ashok Pawar of NCP and Baburao Pacharne of BJP fought a bitter battle, in which Ashok Pawar won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daund Assembly segment: BJP\u2019s Rahul Kul defeated NCP\u2019s Ramesh Thorat with a slender margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Indapur Assembly seat: NCP\u2019s Dattatraya Bharne defeated Congress leader and former minister Harshvardhan Patil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Baramati Assembly constituency: NCP\u2019s Ajit Pawar won with a good margin against BJP\u2019s Gopichand Padalkar of BJP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Purandar Assembly segment: Congress candidate Sanjay Jagtap won with a good margin against Shiv Sena\u2019s Vijay Shivtare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bhor Assembly seat: Congressman Sangram Thopte registered his hat-trick against Shiv Sena\u2019s Kuldip Konde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maval Assembly constituency: NCP\u2019s Sunil Shelke defeated BJP\u2019s Bala Bhegade, who was on a hat-trick. There were seven candidates in the fray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chinchwad Assembly segment: BJP\u2019s the late MLA Laxman Jagtap\u2019s wife Ashwini won against NCP\u2019s Nana Kate and independent Rahul Khalate in the bypoll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pimpri Assembly seat: It is a reserved constituency, where NCP\u2019s Anna Bansode defeated Shiv Sena\u2019s Gautam Chabukswar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bhosari Assembly constituency: Right from its conception, an independent was winning here. But Mahesh Landge broke the jinx. He won on the BJP ticket against independent Vilas Lande.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vadgaon Sheri Assembly constituency: NCP\u2019s Sunil Tingre defeated BJP\u2019s sitting MLA Jagdish Mulik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shivajinagar Assembly segment: BJP\u2019s Siddharth Shirole won against Congress candidate Datta Bahirat. It was a maiden fight for both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kothrud Assembly seat: BJP candidate Chandrakant Patil won with a good margin against MNS candidate Kishor Shinde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Khadakwasla Assembly constituency: BJP\u2019s sitting MLA Bhimrao Tapkir won with a thin margin against NCP\u2019s Sachin Dodke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Parvati Assembly segment: BJP\u2019s Madhuri Misal registered a hat-trick by defeating NCP\u2019s Ashwini Kadam with a good margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hadapsar Assembly seat: NCP\u2019s Chetan Tupe won against BJP\u2019s Yogesh Tilekar with a thin margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cantonment Assembly segment: BJP\u2019s Sunil Kamble defeated Congressman Ramesh Bagve with a slender margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kasba Peth Assembly seat: Ending the dominance of the BJP of almost three decades, Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar snatched the seat in a bypoll against BJP\u2019s Hemant Rasne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Political upheaval possible in the district<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The political scenario is likely to change drastically following splits in two major parties in the State, Shiv Sena and NCP. Surprises are in store in many constituencies in the district as some parties may field new faces. Some sitting MLAs may not get party tickets. The highest number of MLAs are from the NCP. All of them are with Ajit Pawar. However, voters favoured Sharad Pawar faction on two of the four seats in the Lok Sabha polls. Much depends on seat-sharing in the Assembly elections. Sharad Pawar may claim these seats in the MVA while Ajit Pawar would want to field his candidates from the ruling alliance.
