Pune: Serious allegations have cropped up against the Pune office of internationally renowned accounting firm Ernst & Young (EY).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The State Labour Department has decided to act against the company\u2019s office, which has been operating without official permission since 2007. Officials said that this is a clear violation of the Shops and Establishments Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the State Labour Department officials, EY\u2019s Pune office has not procured the necessary permission under the Shops and Establishments Act, which ensures the welfare of employees. It protects their rights and ensures their health and financial security. A notice will be sent to the company for this violation. Further action will be taken after their reply is received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Department acts after the death<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CA Anna Sebastian Perayil (26) died on duty at the EY office in Pune in July this year. It was alleged that her death was a result of work pressure. The victim\u2019s mother wrote to EY India President Rajiv Memani and alleged that her daughter died due to work stress. However, the company refuted her allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The State Labour Department examined the EY Pune office after the incident on the direction of the Central government. It was found that the company did not have the permission under the Shops and Establishments Act. This was revealed by Labour Commissioner Shailendra Pol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Labour Commissioner\u2019s statement<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shailendra Pol said, \u201cWhen we scrutinised various aspects at the EY office in Pune under the Shops and Establishments Act, we found violations of various conditions under the Act. Various legal provisions related to work conditions, minimum wages, maternity benefits, salary deposits and overtime pay have been violated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following this action, the department has decided to send a show-cause notice to the EY Pune office. Further action will be taken after a reply is received. It has been indicated that strict measures will be taken to curb work-related deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
