Pune: Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil presents Traffic Improvement Plan
Pune: Traffic congestion is happening and accidents are taking place due to exponential growth of vehicles on the city roads, encroachments, potholes and unnecessary speed breakers. The civic body, the police and social organisations are trying to find a solution to these problems. This was revealed by Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil.
Patil made a presentation on the current traffic condition of 32 major roads and measures to be taken to improve it. A meeting was held in the Bund Garden Road area. The project will be implemented from August 15. Patil answered queries of residents from Boat Club, Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar areas. DCP (Traffic) Rohidas Pawar was present. The meeting was organised by Lila Poonawalla Foundation Trustee Roda Mehta, social worker Sathi Nair and Dr Neeta Munshi.

Solapur Road, Nobel Hospital-Kharadi Bypass, North Main Road to Solapur Road, Saswad Road, Katraj-Mantarwadi Bypass, Ahmednagar Road, Kanhere Road, New Airport Road, Old Airport Road, Alandi Road, old Pune-Mumbai Highway, Satara Road and Sinhagad Road.

Citizens’ responsibility
Citizens should follow traffic rules; they should not park their vehicles in a ‘no parking’ zone; they should not encroach upon roads; and they should help the police to monitor traffic.
Traffic challenges
The ratio of vehicles and available road area is uneven; public transport is used only 17 pc, it should go up to 50 pc; traffic load will be lessened if the Ring Road work is completed soon; the vehicle population is 38.50 lakh in 2023-24; the road capacity is constant but three lakh new vehicles are added every year.
The traffic measures on the 32 roads
To increase traffic capacity, along with connecting the missing links; one-way traffic, U-turns, ban on turns, parking space, improving signal systems, direction signages, median and punctures at required places, technical improvement for safe roads.
Implementation of rules
Action to be taken on wrong-side driving, parking, traffic rule violations; removing encroachments in coordination with the civic administration; traffic signal repairs; filling of potholes; improving chowks; appointing a traffic engineering consultant.
