Pune: Dams in Khadakwasla chain are 100 pc full; heavy discharge into Mutha river
Pune: Discharge of water from the Khadakwasla Dam has increased following heavy rains in the catchment areas of the four dams supplying water to the city. This resulted in flooding of houses and societies in the Sinhagad Road area on Sunday (August 4).
Parkings of many housing societies were flooded and residents were stranded in this area. Army jawans and Fire Brigade personnel were deployed to rescue citizens. People were evacuated with the help of water boats. Some more areas are likely to be inundated as rainfall has increased.
The IMD predicted heavy rainfall this season in Maharashtra. It is proving to be true. June did not record much rainfall. But rainfall of four cumulative rainy months was recorded in July alone.
August has just started but the rains are not receding. The four reservoirs supplying water to Pune have been filled to their respective capacity. The Ujani Dam will soon have 100 pc water storage. Continuous showers have been reported in Pune and in the Ghat sections.
Similar weather conditions will continue to prevail for a couple of more days, said the met office. There was a red alert in Pune on Saturday and Sunday. A heavy rainfall was witnessed on Sunday. This increased the discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam.
Around 45,000 cusecs of water was released into the Mutha river at 5 pm on Sunday. Earlier, many societies in the Sinhagad Road area were flooded. Many residents were stranded. Jawans of Army and Fire Brigade were trying to shift them to safer places.
Rainfall is likely to occur for two more days. The 35,948 cusecs discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam was reduced to 21,175 cusecs at noon on Monday (August 5). It may vary depending on the situation.
Manikarao Khule, former Meteorologist, Pune, said, “Heavy rainfall was witnessed in Pune and in the Ghat sections for the past four days. Therefore, the rivers flowing towards the east are also flooded and the dams have 100 pc water storage. Water flows downstream from the Ghat section. The Khadakwasla chain of dams has been filled to its capacity. The city will receive rains for two more days. The rain activity will recede after August 6.”
Ujani water storage is 100 pc
The water storage in the Ujani Dam was in minus till July 25. But the reservoir now has almost 100 pc storage within 10 days. Around 45 TMC water flowed into the dam within nine days. All dams in Pune districts have over 90 pc storage.
Relief for four districts due to Ujani Dam water
The current water storage in Ujani reservoir is 107 TMC. Its total capacity is 115 TMC. Water discharge is being made from Daund into the dam. As many as 42 water supply schemes of the four districts of Pune, Ahmednagar, Dharashiv and Solapur are dependent on the Ujani Dam.
