Pune: I don’t oppose pub culture, but there should be some restrictions: Amitesh Kumar
Pune: Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar has said that the police are not opposed to pubs operating in the city. But there should be some restrictions. He was speaking at the ‘Coffee with CP’ programme jointly organised by the Police Arogya Mitra Foundation and the Subhashnagar Madiwale Vasahat Ganeshotsav Mandal.
CP Kumar said, “Parents have learnt a lesson after the Porsche accident. Children do not dare to ask their parents to hand over the car key. Because kids know that a boy caused two deaths and his parents are behind the bars. If pub owners do not follow the regulations, we will not only act against them but will also teach them a lesson for life by giving a ‘financial shock’.”
Drug-free Pune
He said, “We oppose those who break the law. I am happy that I got an opportunity to work in a city like Pune. I was posted in other cities for the past 28 years but I experienced the grand Ganeshotsav in Pune only.”
Kumar narrated his experience of busting the Rs 3,600 crore drug racket with an aim to make Pune drugs-free. He said that there should not be any comfort zone between criminals and the police. If it is there, it should be removed.
He said, “Criminals have realised that they would not be spared if they break the law. We are following up to set up an up-to-date laboratory to investigate cyber crime. We are also taking measures to strengthen security for the elderly and women.”
Safety at hills
CP Kumar said, “Many places in Pune are not illuminated. We are discussing the issue with the Pune Municipal Corporation. This will help reduce crime.” He said that a scheme is being planned to strengthen security at 22 hills in and around the city in the backdrop of the Bopdev Ghat gangrape case.
