Lonavala: A large number of Mumbaikars left for tourist destinations to celebrate Christmas holidays on Wednesday (December 25). This resulted in a massive traffic jam in Khandala Ghat.

The lane from Mumbai to Pune had queues up to 10-12 km. The Highway Police tried to ease the jam by stopping traffic in the opposite lane from Pune at Khandala tunnel. Traffic from the Mumbai lane was then diverted into the Pune lane. However, queues kept on lengthening as the number of vehicles from Mumbai was huge.

Mumbaikars were headed towards Lonavala, Khandala, Kolhapur, Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani and Konkan to celebrate Christman and New Year. Most of them were travelling in private vehicles. As a large number of private vehicles entered the Expressway and the old Pune-Mumbai Highway, snarls resulted.

A jam started building up in the wee hours from Amrutanjan Bridge to Anda Point and at the Khalapur toll booth. The Khandala Highway Police and the Borghat Highway Police were trying to streamline traffic.

Many vehicles were breaking down and were adding to the chaos. The police appealed to tourists to leave home after planning their journey in the next 10 days. They should take care that they do not get stuck in traffic jams and waste their time. They should follow traffic rules and should not add to snarls by violating them.
