Pune Municipal Corporation spends Rs 1,900 per cat on sterilisation; Rs 99.66 lakh spent in 3 years
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) tries to control the population of stray cats in the city by sterilising them. The Universal Animal Welfare Society sterilised 6,542 cats in the past three years. Rs 99,66,500 has been spent on cat sterilisation. The PMC pays Rs 1,900 per sterilisation to the agency.
The civic body has been catching stray dogs, sterilising and vaccinating them to control their population. Such canines are then released back into their original habitat. The PMC is now using the same method to control stray cats in the city. The process started in 2022. The civic body floats tenders. The Universal Animal Welfare Society has been appointed for the purpose. It transports cats in its own vehicle, sterilises, vaccinates them and releases them back into their habitat by tagging them.
Dr Sarika Funde, Chief Veterinary Officer, PMC, said, “The PMC started sterilising stray cats in 2022. It is the first civic body in the State to sterilise and vaccinate cats. It has appointed an agency for this. Sterilisation has helped reduce the number of stray cats.”
