Solapur: The court has directed the police to book a doctor for culpable homicide as a 28-year-old pregnant woman died during a caesarean section performed by the doctor but the police did not register a case. The Karmala Court directed the police to register a culpable homicide case against Dr Ram Binwade, who runs Vitthal Hospital in Karmala.

The Karmala Police have now booked the doctor as per the directive of the court. This is a second such case in the State in the recent past. Earlier, a pregnant woman died as she was refused emergency treatment at the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune.

The case

The victim has been identified as Sheetal Bhausaheb Kargal. Her husband Bhausaheb Kargal lodged a complaint. It stated: “My wife was being treated by Dr Ram Binwade during her pregnancy at Vitthal Hospital. As instructed by the doctor, I took my wife to Dr Binwade at 11.45 am on September 9, 2024. He told me that the mother and the child were healthy and the delivery would be done within 1 or 1.5 hours. However, the delivery was not completed even after a long time. My wife was suffering labour pains. When I asked Dr Binwade, he told me that she and the baby were fine. Though my wife Sheetal was suffering a lot, Dr Binwade did not inform me or my relatives about it.

“Finally, Dr Binwade told us that a caesarean section had to be done, failing which complication could arise. Around 5.30 pm, the caesarean section was done and the baby was handed over to us.”

Dr Binwade avoided direct answers to queries

When the patient’s husband asked the doctor about her health, he told him not to ask the same question again and again and she was fine. Bhausaheb Kargal said, “Later, Dr Binwade instructed us to admit the newborn to Dr Karanjkar Hospital as its health condition was vulnerable.

“Later, Dr Binwade told us that Sheetal had suffered profuse bleeding and she had to be shifted to another hospital for further treatment. He told us to take her to Make Care Hospital in Ahilya Nagar, where a team of five expert doctors was ready to treat her. And she would be urgently treated. But that did not happen. On the contrary, the doctors there did not admit her immediately and Sheetal died.”

Responsible for the woman’s death

The complaint stated that Sheetal died as Dr Binwade did not treat her properly, he neglected her condition. The police dilly-dallied when Sheetal’s relatives visited the police to lodge a complaint. Later, the court issued its order after hearing the complainant’s arguments.
